Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.

This is a lovely saying to remember when camping, or even simply outdoors and we’d like to help you nurture that philosophy.

There is something magical about camping during a fishing trip. It is the same all over the world, you don’t need to factor in getting back to your vehicle, just stop on the river or stillwater that you have been fishing and set up your home for the night, cook some dinner that seems to taste better when you are out in the wild, and slide into your sleeping bag to sleep under the stars listening to the water lap away. Even better, you can decide on the best view to have when you wake in the morning to roll back your canvas door. Whether you are camping way up in the hills or just outside your vehicle on the waters edge, there are ways to make your camping/fishing experience in reality more comfortable, lightweight, durable and efficient and we have everything you need.

On your camping pack-list

Tents/Bivvies – There are few things you need to consider when choosing your tent. How many are sleeping, are you sharing or will you have individual tents? Front opening to double up as a sit in shelter? Insect screens? Transportability seems to be of highest priority for storage in the boot of the car too. There are differing qualities of waterproofing, strength of the poles and durability in general so all of these factors are there for you to decide on which tent to invest in. Cost is a factor too, and not necessarily the more expensive the better. Identify what you want out of a tent, then buy appropriately. Remember to take a few spare tent pegs, and if you know the terrain you’ll be pitching on, there are options to suit.

Sleeping Bags and beds – Do you need to pack your sleeping bag away tiny to go into your back-pack, or is it purely warmth and comfort you need? Sleeping bags, as simple as they may seem, have endless options on the filling, thermal range, size/length, washability, waterproofing qualities. Remember you can look at sleeping bag liners and roll mats, or even for a bit of luxury and raising you off the ground you can look at camping beds/bed chairs.

Cooking – Find out if the place you intend to camp allows open fires? Do you need to take your own firewood/fuel? Do you really want to make a fire or is a camp stove a better option for ease of cleaning up and portability? Consider how many pots you need to heat, will one burner be enough to cope with a family of four, or is it just yourself? Pots, kettles, cookware sets, cutlery, utensils, chopping boards, knives etc. Or, is all you need a flask of hot water and a food flask/jar with a warm prepared meal already in there? Consider a fire blanket or a small fire extinguisher for peace of mind if you are cooking in the outdoors.

Torches – Often overlooked, most of us have a torch on our mobile phones which suffices, but a head torch can make life a whole lot simpler whilst out camping and for fishing in the evening. The battery lifespan will be far superior too.

Midge Lotion and Tick Prevention – If you have been caught out before without any insect repellent, especially on the west coast of Scotland on a still, warm evening, you will never forget the wave of torment that midges can relentlessly undertake. There are options in insect repellent that are non-toxic to our skin and a bottle of ‘Smidge‘ for example will be the most valuable item anyone in a group can have. Another must have, is a midge net – Instead of constantly applying insect repellent, put a midge net over your head and avoid having the midge flying around your face.

Sheep Ticks are a very serious concern in the UK and we must insist you read our post on the potentially fatal sheep tick. Take a tick twist remover, a sticky lint roller to collect any ticks crawling over your clothes, and a packet of antiseptic wipes or fluid.

Water Safety – As with all fishing trips, camping brings further considerations for water safety. This is not really a pack-list category to consider, but certainly part of your planning. Camping near a waterway or in a run-off area in heavy rain can be a serious problem. Be aware of hydro schemes potentially upstream which could release water rapidly, high tides on the coast or in estuaries, and high winds could cause waves to break over the bank and flood your site.
