1. Mepps Aglia

mepps-aglia

The Mepps Aglia has not changed much since its launch in 1938 when lure builder André Meulnart designed the iconic lure. Since then, the Mepps Aglia is probably the most commonly used trout lure on the market. There are 3 weights of this lure available, the 3g and 7g versions are the most popular with trout anglers. The lures unique spinning action that starts immediately on the retreive has so much flash and vibration in the water that it seems to drive trout wild. The red bead located on th shaft of the treble hook, is a great final attractor for any trout that is investigating this lure.

We would recommend varying the speed at which you retrieve these spinners to try and entice a take.

2. Abu Garcia Toby

Introduced by Swedish tackle company Abu Garcia in 1956. The toby, like the Mepp Aglia is historically known for its fish catching abilities. Offering a different presentation in the water, the toby has a more subtle action in the water in comparison to the Mepps Aglia, the toby has a more subtle fluttering dance that mimics a fleeing prey fish.

The solid one peice construction of the toby allows for increased longevity of the lure. We recommend the zebra colour in the 7 or 10g model.

3. Rapala CountDown Elite

The CountDown Elite is a modern iteration of the classic original countdown series. The new Elite model retains the controlled slow-sink rate of the original, allowing more target and specific depth control.

The Elite model comes with a heavy duty through wire construction and higher back profile which produces an enticing flutter action on the drop. The beauty of the new countdown Elite is that it can be straight retrieved or now jigged. We recommend the 4.5-5cm models.

4. Bluefox Vibrax Shad Single

The Vibrax is a more budget-friendly option spinner that has gained popularity by trout anglers over the last 5-7 years. Similar in design to the Mepps Aglia, however, the Vibrax has a unique cone shaped body, this design is made up of a weight that is covered by a metal cone, this unique design emits low-frequency sound vibrations during the retrieve that attracts the attention of trout from a far.

This model comes equipped with an inline single hook, this fish friendlier hook option allows for increased hook holds and reduces the chances of snagging on weed, rocks and other debris.

5. Bluefox Moresilda Trout

The Bluefox Moresilda trout lure is a small compact spoon that packs a punch. The small yet dense little Moresilda is a great casting lure that will work well in stillwater or river settings. The slight S-curved body provides a mesmerising flutter on the drop and an erratic wobble on the retrieve. As previously mentioned, the lure has a small overall profile but with it’s added weight, will allow you to fish deeper in flowing water more effectively.

If you’re looking for compact trout lure that casts like a bullet and can be worked effectively in deep flowing water, then check out the Moresilda!

6. Rapala Jointed Shad Rap

The 5cm articulated lures are deep-bodied cranbaits that are designed to provoke attacks with their super aggressive action. The long bill is great for ticking the top of structure, while the bouyant Shap Rap can float out of snags way on the pause. An ideal lure for deep river pools, stillwaters, reservoirs and lochs.

tazzy

7. Tasmanian Devil 7G

These lures have distinctive action that swings through the water like a wounded prey fish. Coming in over a hundred different variations, these “Tazzys” have established a global loyalty amongst anglers.

Most popular colours are the trout colours like Brown (no.46) and Rainbow (No.45) and the Stinger (No.43) and Predator (No.13) but we think it is more the action than the colour that make these lures so attractive to the fish.

Here’s a hint, remove the included wire trace by pulling from the hook end. Keep the swivel and the hook and attach the swivel to the hook with a stainless steel split ring. If you lose the swivel or find just the body of a tassie in your lure box, shop for #12 barrel swivels, these are ideal. This ‘line-through’ setup will allow the lure to shoot up the line when playing a fish and you’ll have a great connection with a swivel right at the hook for improved line twist avoidance.

flying-c

8. Reuben Heaton Micro Flying C

The classic flying C is usually associated with salmon fishing, however, the micro model at 3.5g has proven to be a prolific trout lure. Coming equipped with a blade like the Mepp, the flying C has the added advantage of a skirt that provides a visual strike point and additional subtle vibration thanks to the forked tail.
