Leader and Tippet Material

Tippet for fly fishing is added between the end of the fly line and your chosen fly. Different lengths and breaking strains of tippet can be used - longer, lighter tippets are less likely to spook wary fish and present flies delicately, whilst shorter, heavier tippet is useful for fishing bigger flies and helps to combat windy conditions.
Fly fishing tippet is available in a few types such as monofilament, fluorocarbon and copolymer. Mono is a good all round tippet material and can be used in lighter breaking strains for fishing flies like nymphs, buzzers or wets and a heavier line is good for fishing lures. Unlike mono, fluorocarbon is a sinking material and is almost invisible in water. This makes it good for fishing small flies like buzzers and nymphs subsurface, it is also stiffer than mono so is useful for turning over bigger flies and lures. Copolymer is often used for fishing dry flies, it’s more supple than mono or fluorocarbon allowing small dries to be presented naturally.
