Airflo: The Polymer Pioneers
Airflo has been at the forefront of fly line technology since the 1970s, pioneering the use of polyurethane (PU) to craft some of the most advanced and durable fly lines on the market. Founded by Gareth Jones, Airflo’s mission was to create fly lines that were not only high performing but also more environmentally friendly than traditional PVC alternatives. With its headquarters in Wales, Airflo remains a global leader in fly line innovation, delivering cutting edge solutions for anglers worldwide.
The Airflo Story
The story of Airflo is one of relentless innovation driven by a passion for fly fishing. In the 1970s, founder Gareth Jones returned to Wales from his time in Africa and, fueled by a desire for better tackle, established Airflo. The brand's revolutionary concept was to replace the industry standard PVC with polyurethane as the core material for fly lines. This decision was pivotal, as PU lines are more durable, remain supple for longer, and do not contain the harmful plasticisers and volatile organic compounds found in PVC lines. This bold move cemented Airflo's reputation as a pioneer committed to both performance and sustainability.
The Airflo Advantage
Choosing Airflo products means equipping yourself with gear that offers a real advantage on the water, built on a foundation of scientific development and angler focused design.
Superior Durability: Airflo's polyurethane technology makes their lines exceptionally durable, resisting cracking and wear far better than traditional materials. This ensures your line maintains its performance for years.
Low-Stretch Cores: A hallmark of Airflo lines is their ultra low stretch Power Core. This technology provides incredible sensitivity, allowing you to feel subtle takes with greater clarity and achieve faster, more positive hook sets.
Environmentally Conscious: As pioneers of polyurethane lines, Airflo gear is more environmentally friendly. Their materials do not contain the harmful plasticisers or volatile organic compounds found in many other fly lines.
Optimised Casting: Airflo's unique Ridge Technology reduces friction as the line passes through the guides, while their Super Dri coating ensures floating lines stay high on the surface. These features work in tandem to deliver longer, smoother, and more accurate casts.
Technology: Engineering Performance from the Core
Airflo’s leadership in fly line and reel technology is underpinned by a suite of proprietary innovations that translate into tangible advantages on the water.
Power Core: This technology features an ultra low stretch core with only 6% stretch, providing a direct connection to the fish. This results in superior sensitivity for bite detection and more effective, immediate hook sets.
Super Dri: A proprietary line coating that creates an extremely buoyant and slick surface. The Super Dri compound does not contain VOCs and its unique ridge profile reduces friction, allowing for effortless casting distance and a high riding line tip.
Ridge Technology: A unique textured or grooved line surface that minimises friction between the line and rod guides. This innovative design allows the line to shoot with less resistance, significantly increasing casting range and line speed.
Welded Loops: Airflo was among the first manufacturers to include factory welded loops on their fly lines. This creates a strong, neat, and reliable connection point for attaching leaders, eliminating the need for bulky knots and making leader changes quick and simple.
