Conehead Tube Flies

Conehead salmon flies are tube flies finished with a cone, or bead, at the front of the fly. Coneheads are available in a wide range of patterns, sizes and tube styles. Flies tied on plastic or aluminium tubes are lighter than those tied on copper or tungsten tubes and will fish higher in the water. Copper and tungsten tubes are useful when fishing high water conditions or deep runs as the fly will sink faster. Bigger tubes will be heavier and give a bigger profile fly than those tied on smaller, shorter tubes.
Cone heads add weight to the front of the fly. The added weight makes the fly sink faster allowing it to fish deeper and can also change the way the fly swims through the water. The added weight at the front of the fly will cause it to move differently through the water compared to the same pattern with no conehead, this change is sometimes all that’s needed to trigger fish to strike. Bright, fluorescent colour cones can also be used to add a hotspot to the front of the fly.
