There is a special thrill to be gained from landing a heavyweight, hard fighting pike on a fly that you have tied yourself. David has developed flies to imitate the fish that pike eat – both in terms of appearance and by their action in the water. They are durable in order to withstand the pike’s impressive armoury of teeth.
David shows how to tie his basic, three-dimensional baitfish pattern (christened Dodds’ 3d Dodger by Mark Bowler, the editor of Fly Fishing & Fly Tying) He also demonstrates how the basic pattern can be adapted to produce a range of flies to fish in particular water conditions throughout the changing seasons.
These flies work. David and his guiding clients have used them to great effect, landing many pike of more than twenty pounds and a good number of thirty pound specimens.
