Orvis Gel Spun Backing

The Orvis Gel Spun Backing is designed for handling big game angling due to it’s superior strength and will give you more capacity on your fly reel than regular Dacron backing.

The Orvis Gel Spun Backing is able to give you more than 50% backing capacity compared to Dacron and has a very small diameter to obtain a much larger length on the reel for slower spool rotations per minute on runs and faster pickups. This backing is built from braided gel-spun polyethylene and is 10 times stronger than steel in equal diameters.

Designed with virtually no stretch, this gel spun backing is incredibly strong and durable with high abrasion resistance. It is designed with a very low coefficient of friction so it will not damage your guides and it is able to retain 100% strength while in the water. This backing is unaffected by UV, gas, oil, salt or detergents.

The Orvis Gel Spun Backing is available in either 35lb or 50lb breaking strains and is available in various spool lengths which you can select from our drop down menu.
