Description / OPST Commando Smooth
Since the release of the OPST Commando Head, it has been hailed as one of the best shooting heads on the market. But the need to attach it to a running line left it with a clunky junction that looked and felt out of place with the smoothness the head offers. OPST have listened to our cries for an integrated, streamline system and have now solved that problem with the Commando Smooth.
The OPST Commando Smooth is a fully integrated shooting head and thin coated monofilament running line system. The older Commando Head and running line would require a loop to loop connection that would catch on rod eyes. This integrated line has a seamless construction so it would avoid this issue, making it highly beneficial to trout anglers who wish to strip their flies all the way in.
The line is perfect for fishing at close range, especially for trout, and with a super thin 0.635mm diameter, the running line shoots almost as well as monofilament but it floats higher and is much more forgiving and easier to handle.
If it's not broke, don't fix it. The Commando Smooth still uses the same good old Commando head that anglers have grown to love. Instead, this time it includes a seamless connection to the running line, truly putting the smooth into its name.
The OPST Commando Smooth is available in a Sauk Blue / Orange colour and in various grain weights that you can select using our drop-down menu above.

5 Fantastic as a Switch line
Review by Paul
This is a brilliant line for anyone fishing for salmon or sea trout in small rivers. I Spey/underhand cast this line - it is incredible for snake rolling as well.
Why buy it? With a 12 foot multi-tip (I use Guideline or Hardy tips borrowed from my other mult-tip shooting heads) it always turns these over in a straight line. It manages to do this even if you don’t have room to set the cast up properly - especially if you are casting under, or close to trees and bushes.
I use the 225 grain version - with a 12 foot tip. This is only 25 feet of fly line to manoeuvre in tight spots.
It will turnover 12 foot tapered leaders added to the tips with 6 foot tippet.
It is also very good in windy conditions because everything is so compact.
I bought this line as an alternative to the Commando head and laser line set-up I have been using for a couple of years. On small rivers, I found the knot on the running line continually rattling through the top rings. I still use this setup on larger rivers but the integrated line is perfect if you want to work the fly right back to your feet.
It will even turnover heavy flies as well - large tungsten cone heads (6mm) but I only use a short 6-7foot leader for this.
Just make sure you match the correct weight, including the tips, to your rod.
