Fly Line & Leader Treatments

Looking for a fly line treatment to improve your casting distance? Fly line coatings should be slick to reduce friction when the line is travelling through the fly rod guides improving casting distance. Over time when lines are being used they pick up dirt and grit and lose their slick coating. Fly line treatments and cleaners are used to clean the line and help restore the line's original slick finish.
Tippet & Leader Treatments are commonly used to degrease leaders and tippets to encourage them to sink. This is particularly useful when fishing dry flies as a leader floating on the surface is obvious to fish looking from below.

Fly line care and treatments are important for maintaining the performance and longevity of your fly fishing line. Proper care ensures that your line remains supple, floats well and casts smoothly. Here is an overview of fly line care and treatments:

Fly Line Cleaning: Regular cleaning is crucial to remove dirt, debris, and grime that can accumulate on the fly line. Use a mild soap or dedicated fly line cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge to gently wipe the line. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals that can damage the line's coating. Always unravel the full fly line and work from the back to the front of the line - this will allow any twists in your fly line to be reduced.

Cleaning Solutions For Fly Lines: Besides soap and water, various commercially available fly line cleaning solutions are designed specifically for cleaning and treating fly lines. These solutions typically remove dirt, algae and other contaminants while leaving a thin protective layer on the line. Using de-greasers such as washing up liquid is not recommended for floating lines as this will reduce the buoyancy of the line.

Fly Line Conditioning Treatments: Fly line conditioning helps restore and maintain the line's suppleness and buoyancy. Apply a fly line dressing or conditioner to the line after cleaning and drying. This treatment helps lubricate the line, reducing friction and improving casting distance. Lubricants can be applied to the fly line to reduce friction and enhance casting distance. Silicone-based lubricants are commonly used for floating lines only, and a small amount can be applied and spread evenly using a soft cloth or your fingertips. Avoid applying too much lubricant, as it can attract dirt and debris.

Fly Line Storage: Proper storage is essential to prevent damage to the fly line. Avoid leaving the line exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures for extended periods. After each fishing trip, thoroughly clean and dry the line before storing it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Remember to consult the manufacturer's instructions for specific care recommendations, as different types of fly lines may have specific cleaning and treatment requirements. Regular maintenance and care will help extend the life of your fly line and ensure optimal performance on your fishing adventures.

Within our line treatments category we also have tippet sinkants for sinking your leaders and tippets so they're submerged from the surface water film and therefore less visible to the fish.
